What Are Dry Eyes?

Your tears are a salt solution. As eyes become dry, they lose water and become too salty. And just like when you throw salt on a wound, they sting and burn.

Dry eye is a condition characterized by loss of water from the tear film. As a result, the tear film becomes saltier and more concentrated. When the tear film becomes too concentrated, osmosis pulls water out of the surface of the eye, creating hyperosmolarity.

What Are the Symptoms of Dry Eyes?

Though the symptoms may vary from person to person, common symptoms include the following.

What Are the Causes of Dry Eyes?

Dry eye can result from a number of causes, including both physical and environmental conditions. No matter the cause, the result is hyperosomolarity of your tears.

• AGE. Dry eye is a part of the natural aging process. The majority of people over age 50 experience some symptoms of dry eyes.
• GENDER. Women are more likely to develop dry eyes due to hormonal changes caused by pregnancy, the use of oral contraceptives and menopause.
• MEDICATIONS. Certain medicines, including antihistamines, decongestants, blood pressure medications and antidepressants, can reduce the amount of tears produced in the eyes.
• MEDICAL CONDITIONS. Persons with rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and thyroid problems, glaucoma and Sjogren's syndrome, are more likely to have symptoms of dry eyes. • ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. Exposure to smoke, wind and dry climates can increase tear evaporation resulting in dry eye symptoms. Failure to blink regularly, such as when staring at a computer screen for long periods of time, can also contribute to drying of the eyes.
• OTHER FACTORS. Long-term use of contact lenses can be a factor in the development of dry eyes. Refractive eye surgeries, such as LASIK, can cause decreased tear production and dry eyes.
